Tapping Points
How Does EFT Tapping Work?
You use your hands to tap on various energy centers of your body (a.k.a meridians), while recalling a specific memory, event, or situation, along with the emotions and feelings you have towards it. The physical act of tapping literally sends a message to your amygdala — the flight or flight mechanism in your brain — that you are safe.
The amygdala detects danger and helps us respond to threats. It’s also the area of the brain where trauma and stress get stored.
So, even if you experienced a trauma 10, 20, or 50 years ago, it can impact your life today. Because that trauma and its associated emotions are stored, like a computer file, in your brain.
This could be the reason you have flashbacks, unexplained heavy emotions, nightmares, or experience obsessive thinking. These examples are the body and mind’s way of communicating with you. These situations could be linked to an old trauma that’s still part of your subconscious mind.
Are you familiar with the word ‘trigger?’ When we become triggered by something uncomfortable, painful, or traumatic from our past, our body releases cortisol, known as the “stress hormone.” Not only do we subconsciously and energetically relive this old event all over again, but due to this chemical release, our nervous system goes into fight or flight mode. Over time, this cycle becomes problematic.
Tapping is one method to help put an end to this harmful, repetitive cycle.
By tapping on the meridian points, you switch off the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and activate your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest).
This makes healing possible.
Also, tapping is an invaluable tool for acknowledging and releasing emotions you’ve suppressed. If you don’t process and free your negative emotions, science tells us that they can create serious health issues.
